about

04 — profile
Marcel Aburakia hosting The Icon League final in Vienna

Marcel Nadim Aburakia is a journalist, broadcaster and podcaster — born in Munich in 1995 to a German mother and a Palestinian father. He studied journalism at Hochschule Macromedia, a trimedia programme across Munich, Madrid and Washington D.C. with a focus on sports journalism. He lives in Berlin and works in German, Arabic, English and Spanish.

He laid the groundwork in 2017/18 at ZDF’s Washington D.C. bureau — inside the engine room of US coverage. Back in Germany he worked as a freelance television journalist for Bayerischer Rundfunk, Sport1 and Sky News, then became the face and editor-in-chief of the football channel Fußballhelden. Since 2021 he has been on air full-time for Deutsche Welle. His work moves between sport, news, politics and society — and the questions of identity that run through all of it.

He currently fronts The Icon League with Toni Kroos and Elias Nerlich, formats for EA Sports and – on DAZN – the LGCY Series; for ARD he hosted Buy Better in 2025. On the 25/7 podcast he talked to guests from sport, business and social media with Arda Saatci (2024–2025). Before that he founded and hosted the podcast Kanackische Welle (2018–2021) and was host and editorial lead of FUNK’s Was würde Baba sagen? until 2025. He reported the ARD series Hard Life and presented the Amazon documentary Gekommen um zu bleiben. He has written columns for Spiegel and Süddeutsche Zeitung, and covered the NBA for FIVE Magazin.
